AcuRite 01012M Weather Station Review

AcuRite 01012M weather station was launched in 2018 replacing the older AcuRite 01057RM model. Though the difference in quality and specifications remain to be minimal, the newer is definitely better looking and feels like an update. If you are looking for a weather station that comes from a reliable brand and also doesn’t put a hole in your pocket, this product might be just the one for you.

Who Needs The AcuRite 01012M Weather Station?

Keeping an eye on the weather updates has never been easier. With AcuRite 01012M, you will be able to monitor hyper-local weather conditions around you at any time you want. If you are an outgoing person who loves going on hikes, drives, treks, etc., you will never regret purchasing this weather station. It is not particularly made for the professionals and experts as they need pin-point accuracy but the hobbyists and enthusiasts will find this delightful.

Now you can plan that long-awaited high-school reunion that was often spoiled due to the weather being a killjoy. Thunderstorms, bad weather, extreme snow, etc. have usually been the reasons for such get-togethers getting canceled. If you have your hands on this model, you will be in an ideal position to make your plans accordingly and get those back-pats from your long-time pals for the execution of a perfect knees-up.

Why We Recommend The AcuRite 01012M Weather Station

It is self-explanatory that weather stations are the most dependable devices for weather updates but the question that still scratches the mind is: Why this particular product? Everything has its pros and cons which we will be listing here along with the reasons for the recommendation.

AcuRite Access

AcuRite has always been inclined towards the internet-enabled systems yet maintaining the consistency in their models. The products they deliver get updated with the technology and provide you with enhanced experience with each new model. In the 01012M, AcuRite made an addition of Access, a new internet-connection device that can be used through My AcuRite app to monitor the weather around your property. Access can connect with up to 7 compatible sensors from which it receives wireless signals and uploads through the router.

Access has a battery backup for saving the data of max. 12 hours during power outages. It replaces the previous “Smarthub” and has 10 times more data in comparison. Though Access can support just 7 sensors while Smarthub was able to manage 10 sensors. Access might be lagging in this region but that doesn’t stop people from preferring Access to Smarthub.

It is an icing on the cake for you if you have Amazon Alexa as it is compatible with it. You can just go: “Alexa, give me the weather updates” and you will get all the information through the weather station.

Display

The digital display screen of AcuRite 01012M uses a 5.0V AC adapter for primary power and an illuminated color display that is appealing to the eyes. Temperature readouts and all the other data is in black font on the color background. It has an auto-dimming brightness feature so it wouldn’t bother your eyes.

The display console can be mounted on a wall or set on the top of the table. The display shows wind chill, heat index, dew point, and also Weather Ticker which streams real-time alerts from the weather stations. If we take the price into consideration, this product has more than enough to offer.

Why We Recommend The AcuRite 01012M Weather Station

Sensors

AcuRite 01012M is a Pro+ 5 in 1 sensor with a dual solar panel design. It can be installed conveniently for showing the readouts as:

  • Indoor/Outdoor temperature with a trend arrow.
  • Indoor/Outdoor humidity with a trend arrow.
  • Rainfall accumulation data which collects records by year, by month, by rainfall events, and also tracks the days since it last rained.
  • Wind vane and anemometer to measure wind speed and direction.
  • Automatic self-emptying rain collector cup.

The two solar panels do not power the batteries but they are there for powering the internal fan so there is maximum temperature accuracy at all times. A barometer is provided as well, which is a plus, to measure barometric pressure inside the house.

Accuracy

This is the region where you will find the model lagging behind as it does not give precise readouts but they are close enough to be sufficient. It is recommended that you should not go for the product if you’re buying it for studying or as a part of your profession. The differences between readouts can be seen as:

  • Temperature can be off by around 2°F
  • Rainfall differentiates by 0.05” per inch
  • Wind direction indicators can differ by nearly 16 points
  • Wind speed differences might be between 2-5mph
  • Humidity can be off by 3-5%

Wind speed reports arrive at 18-second intervals while temperature and wind-direction in 36 seconds. My AcuRite application can take up to 5-10 minutes at times to show the updates. The aforementioned figures are the maximum differences it can have but not more than that. Even these are uncommon and occur rarely. Considering the price of the product, we would say these are enough to tolerate and manageable.

Additional Features

  • You can get customized alerts to the registered device during extreme weather conditions. It warns about likely flood conditions, high wind speed, rainfall, and so on.
  • It has a pretty good wireless range which extends to 330 feet (100 meters) with the ethernet cable plugging into the internet router.
  • You have the option to share the weather updates of your area with friends and relatives to let them know better. It also shares the data to the communities such as Weather Underground through the internet.
  • Unlike many others, AcuRite has excellent customer support that resolves people’s issues and concerns immediately. Their knowledge is the reflection of their expertise and you wouldn’t be disappointed.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q. Can I add one more display unit for another room?

Yes. It is possible to add one more. Multiple displays can read information from the same sensor. Just make sure the ABC switches are the same as the 5-in-1 sensor.

Q. Where should this be mounted? What are the tools needed for mounting?

It should be mounted a minimum of 5-feet above the ground. There is a need for some basic tools which you will find in your house itself.

Q. Does this weather station give forecasts regarding freezing?

Unfortunately, no. It does not tell if the weather is going to be freezing or below. It does, however, send other updates and warning alerts.

Q. What are the batteries required?

The sensor needs 4 AA batteries and the display needs 6 AA batteries for back-up. High-quality and fresh alkaline batteries are highly recommended. You can use lithium batteries for the sensor but never use them for the display. Batteries can lose %3 power each year so ensure that the expiration date is a minimum of 6 years out.

Q.  Is it possible to link the accounts with an AcuRite weather station I already have?

Yes. A single My AcuRite account can be used for multiple AcuRite weather stations. AcuRite Access will be your savior here.

Final Words

Though the above suggests that this product is one of the best in its class, it is you who decides what you want but we would tell you to go grab it if you’re not looking to spend a lot of money. Of course, there are many alternatives out there but they are above this price range. We suggest you consider other models and products if you’re a professional or studying in this field, otherwise this works just fine.
